Rimske Toplice, Laško, city of thermal springs, beer and honey
The fact that in the period of greatest prosperity the Romans built structures on locations where they wanted to make best use of nature’s resources suggests that Rimske Toplice are richly endowed. The vicinity of Laško, where beer has been brewed for nearly 200 years, and Celje, the city of the most famous Slovenian aristocratic family, adds a special value to the destination, because you can also experience the rich history of these two cities. But it is certainly a must to explore the local myth about miraculous effects of healing waters of Rimske Terme.
OVERVIEW
After arriving to the hotel, you can make use of everything the hotel complex has to offer already on the first day. If you want to be active, there are plenty of hiking options in the area. Some of the local cultural attractions are the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes and the Aškerc homestead (birth house of poet Anton Aškerc) in Senožete. Within Rimske Terme are is also a Thermal park that is one of the most interesting parks in Slovenia. It is a home to giant old trees that originate from all parts of the world; such as the giant tulip tree, Spanish, Caucasian and Colorado fir, grey and black walnut tree, yews, cypresses, Canadian hemlock, sequoia or a mammoth tree, and many others. The giant sequoias were planted back in 1879 to honour the British princess and the Prussian heiress Victoria. Even the pathway was named after her – the Victoria promenade, but it was later renamed to the Russian path. Numerous other foreign and domestic types of trees were planted by guests as a sign of gratitude for restored health. Braver individuals may take a walk to any of the surrounding hills. Of course, don’t forget about Laško and Celje.

Hotel Zdraviliški dvor ****
Zdraviliški dvor is part of a hotel complex which also encompasses the Rimski dvor and Sofijin dvor hotels. In the heart of Rimske Toplice, next to a forest and with a view of the Savinja River, you are certain to find a place for yourself.
They say that all of the recoveries are thanks to the eternally young nymphs that supposedly live in the thermal water. You can try for yourself what kinds of beneficial effects rise from the springs at the depth of nearly 1000 m below the Earth's surface. Enjoy the healing springs and recharge with energy for everyday tasks. You are warmly welcome to visit the Wellness Centre and the Sauna Land. You can swim in the indoor and outdoor swimming polls and get a tan on the terrace.
Fill your lungs with fresh air in the nearby forests, admire the surroundings while running – you will be surprised to find that this is the home to the giant sequoia trees, Canadian hemlock, Thujopsis dolabrata, cypress, yew tree, Californian cedar tree … If the mighty and magnificent courts do not pique your interest, visit the Celje Castle or walk through the centre of Rimske Terme.
The Zdraviliški dvor hotel offers 76 modernly appointed rooms and suites. The common areas and hotel rooms feature Latin sayings and proverbs. What does the inscription above your headboard say? Was it selected at random? Rooms are air conditioned and feature an LCD TV, mini bar and free WiFi.
Gourmet experience: Restavracija Pavus
The Tabor Castle was mentioned already in 1145 and is a historical experience in itself. The restaurant Pavus knows how to combine the experience of history with the modern Slovenian cuisine, stemming from traditional culinary experiences of Slovenia. It occupies two floors of the castle tower, in warmer months they also serve outdoors. Like nature, the menu changes with the seasons. Their philosophy is to create unforgettable creations for their guests through locally picked ingredients with modern cooking techniques. They create a new Slovenian cuisine on the border between city and nature, behind the medieval walls. The wine shop is composed of carefully selected local and global wines. The wine list contains 300 labels. Each bottle of wine is a story for itself, but together with their culinary creations they write the story of future. Raw materials are obtained from local food producers or they head out for a walk to the nearby forest themselves, in order to conjure up creations that overcome ordinariness with forest fruits and gifts of nature. As an acknowledgement of quality, they have been awarded the Michelin Plate, and the Gault&Millau guide has awarded three Chef’s hats and a rating of 16.5 out of 20 points.

Meet the chef: Marko Pavčnik
Chef Marko Pavcnik is one of the chefs of the younger generation who significantly influences the development of the new Slovenian cuisine. He turned the spotlight on himself with exceptional creativity and the selection of fresh, often wild, ingredients. He is particularly fond of less known herbs he picks in nearby forests and meadows. His cuisine includes wild hops, sorrel, acacia, wood sorrel and many others most people cannot even name. He loves challenging stereotypes not with the new, modern and unseen, but with the forgotten and newly invented. His excellent knowledge of cooking techniques enables him to successfully transform his ideas into plates. He explores traditional ingredients, such as overheated cream, and seeks new wild plants and includes them in his haute cuisine. Foraging is a source of inspiration, while new flavours and textures make castle meals unforgettable. He is an active member of JRE, and he likes sharing his knowledge in cooking classes. Culinary critics rank him among the top Slovenian chefs. Even as a child, chef Marko Pavčnik knew he wanted to become a cook. He says he is self-taught, as his knowledge is a product of incredible curiosity, exploration and particularly experiments in the kitchen. In 2011, he opened his own restaurant, Pavus, he is an active member of JRE, and he likes sharing his knowledge in cooking classes. Culinary critics rank him among the top Slovenian chefs.
