Beer has been brewed in Laško for nearly 200 years. Integration of the honey making tradition and the gingerbread making tradition with the first Laško beer gave birth to the legend of Zlatorog, perhaps the most known beer even in the former Yugoslavia. The thermal complexes create a unique thermal experience and the river Savinja delights with romantic walking trails and relaxing atmosphere. If you are interesting in cultural legacy, you will love exploring old bourgeois stories, while gourmet enthusiasts will satisfy their sense in the top-quality restaurant Pavus in the Laško Castle. Laško is certainly one of the best hidden gems of Slovenia.
After you get settled at the hotel complex, thermal water and the whole wellness experience will probably be a good option. An evening stroll along the river will awaken your inner flair for romance, accompanied by beautiful views of the night-lit sky. On the second day, you can enjoy exploring the history of the old city centre. Go to the Orožen square to find a jellyfish, a woman with snake hair, which shows the city was inhabited already in the ancient times; go to the Aškerc square to find the votive column with the image of Mary, go to the Valvazor square and find the Špital building, where the first jug of beer was brewed in Laško. The Manor of the Counts von der Lilien is today an administrative center of the city, in the past it was the seat of the court of justice. The culinary experience in the Tabor Castle, in the renowned Pavus restaurant, can be combined with the tour of the castle. On the third day you can explore the surroundings, either go hiking or mountain climbing, but you can also simply indulge in thermal baths and other wellness options, or perhaps dig deeper into one of honey-related stories.
Hotel Thermana Park Laško is a very photogenic hotel with the beautiful glass dome above the pools, which opens in summer months.
Beneath the dome is the Thermal center spanning across an area pf as much as 2200 m². High in the air there are three round bubbling massage pools. There is also a pool with waves, Kneipp area, children’s water corner, recreation-massage pool with a waterfall and floor springs, fast river and a slide. The outdoor section of the complex, in addition to the thermal pool, also includes the recreation-massage pool and children’s pool, water slide and a toboggan attached to the inside. On the confluence of Rečica and Savinja there is a massage pool in the form of a crystal.
The Wellness Spa center includes Ayurveda Center Thermana & Veda, and among numerous treatments you can also enjoy beer baths and massages.
The hotel counts 188 contemporary furnished rooms painted with lively colours. Some have a view of Savinja, but all are air-connected and equipped with an LCD TV, a minibar and free WiFi.
The Tabor Castle was mentioned already in 1145 and is a historical experience in itself. The restaurant Pavus knows how to combine the experience of history with the modern Slovenian cuisine, stemming from traditional culinary experiences of Slovenia. It occupies two floors of the castle tower, in warmer months they also serve outdoors. Like nature, the menu changes with the seasons. Their philosophy is to create unforgettable creations for their guests through locally picked ingredients with modern cooking techniques. They create a new Slovenian cuisine on the border between city and nature, behind the medieval walls. The wine shop is composed of carefully selected local and global wines. The wine list contains 300 labels. Each bottle of wine is a story for itself, but together with their culinary creations they write the story of future. Raw materials are obtained from local food producers or they head out for a walk to the nearby forest themselves, in order to conjure up creations that overcome ordinariness with forest fruits and gifts of nature. As an acknowledgement of quality, they have been awarded the Michelin Plate, and the Gault&Millau guide has awarded three Chef’s hats and a rating of 16.5 out of 20 points.

Chef Marko Pavcnik is one of the chefs of the younger generation who significantly influences the development of the new Slovenian cuisine. He turned the spotlight on himself with exceptional creativity and the selection of fresh, often wild, ingredients. He is particularly fond of less known herbs he picks in nearby forests and meadows. His cuisine includes wild hops, sorrel, acacia, wood sorrel and many others most people cannot even name. He loves challenging stereotypes not with the new, modern and unseen, but with the forgotten and newly invented. His excellent knowledge of cooking techniques enables him to successfully transform his ideas into plates. He explores traditional ingredients, such as overheated cream, and seeks new wild plants and includes them in his haute cuisine. Foraging is a source of inspiration, while new flavours and textures make castle meals unforgettable. He is an active member of JRE, and he likes sharing his knowledge in cooking classes. Culinary critics rank him among the top Slovenian chefs. Even as a child, chef Marko Pavčnik knew he wanted to become a cook. He says he is self-taught, as his knowledge is a product of incredible curiosity, exploration and particularly experiments in the kitchen.
