Bees and Beer

Bees and Beer

Bees are our pride and joy as they provide us with the ingredient for numerous delicacies. Honey is a high-end natural product that ensures a healthier and fuller life. Folk traditions in Slovenia are based on love and attention. Numerous Alpine valleys offer natural features and the possibility of learning about local traditions. They offer relaxation and regeneration of the body and soul. Because we grow a lot of hops in Slovenia, the brewing of beer is intricately woven into our history. Our programme featuring bees and beer will make your experience of Slovenia an especially rich and interesting one.

OVERVIEW

DAY 1:
You will begin your exploration of bees at the Beekeeping Education Centre of Slovenia which is situated at the heart of Slovenia that is rich in beekeeping traditions and home to the Beekeepers' Association of Slovenia. You will learn about the history of apiculture in Slovenia, visit the herb and apiculture study trail of melliferous plants, and admire an apiary. You will taste honey and other bee products and receive a small gift at the end. As befits the story, you will have lunch at the Čebelica inn. The bee trail will lead you to one of the most fairytale-like places in Slovenia: the valley of Logarska dolina. At the regional centre, you will learn how sheep wool is felted and see a presentation of the autochthonous Jezersko-Solčava breed of sheep as well as a presentation of unique felt products made of sheep wool. This will be followed by a visit to the Logarska dolina landscape park with a walk on the natural-ethnographic trail toward the Rinka waterfall. Dinner and accommodation are organised at the beautiful Plesnik hotel in Logarska dolina.

DAY 2:
Day 2 is devoted to beer and the brewing tradition in Slovenia. You will first visit the Eco-Museum of Hop-Growing and Brewing Industry in Slovenia where you will learn about the long-standing brewing tradition in Slovenia. The oldest preserved documents attesting to the brewing of beer in these parts dates back to the 13th century. At the end of the 19th century, craft breweries expanded rapidly across Slovenia, the biggest of them brewing as much as 3,000 hectolitres of beer. You will, of course, have the opportunity to try the beer as well. The beer fountain is the final touch that makes your experience complete. After lunch, you will drive to the city of counts, Celje, which even competed during its heyday with the great city of Vienna. The remains of the once mighty castle still stand above the city and will take you back to the time of one of the most influential families of the middle Ages that was certainly the most powerful family in Slovenian history.

Celje Castle

Romantic, enticing, magnificent, dark, frightening – the Old Castle of Celje. It is a must-see sight for all visitors to Celje regardless of where they are from. A mighty walled caste towering over the city is sure to leave you speechless. Once you visit it, it will stay in your memories forever.

The earliest written record of the Old Castle of Celje dates from 1323. Its image used to be much more modest as it only comprised of a Romanesque palladium with the rampart. The Castle took its present form later when it came into the possession of the Counts of Celje, the most famous and most important ruling family on the territory of present-day Slovenia. They expanded their authority and political power deep into then Europe and were thus masters of the destiny of a broader geographical area. Frederick I was the first to move to the Old Castle of Celje with his wife and four children. After moving in, he fundamentally transformed the Castle and enlarged it into a comfortable residence. Later on, the Castle gradually expanded. Around 1400, the Counts also erected a four-storey defence tower on a nearby hill that was subsequently referred to as Frederick’s Tower and the defence wall that have been preserved until today. The tower was named after Frederick II who was imprisoned there. The Dynasty of the Counts of Celje ended with the death of the last male member, Ulrich II.

When the Castle was renovated, it also obtained a modern Tourist Information Centre and Veronika Café and turned into an attractive tourist site offering a wonderful view of the city and the surrounding countryside. At the Tourist Information Centre, visitors can obtain leaflets and other materials on the Castle, Celje and its surrounding and the sights and various events. Various souvenirs and products of arts and crafts can also be purchased.

Every last Saturday in August, the Celje Old Castle is the venue of a traditional medieval festival "Dežela Celjska vabi" ("Land of Celje invites"). Throughout the summer, the program Live History taking place there offers an immersive experience as the visitors can become a part of “alive” history and take part in sword fights with knights, shoot with bows, flirt with the princesses, unleash their creativity in medieval workshops, etc.

Felting is one of the most ancient and simplest forms of making cloth. It is about 8000 years old. This technique is still applied by some nomadic peoples in Central Asia and the northern part of East Asia. The procedure has not changed: sheared wool in combination with water and soap and strong rubbing begins to adhere and forms a compact base - felt.

Logar Valley Landscape Park

Mother nature sculpted the Logar Valley deep in the heart of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and surrounded it with mountains over 2000m high (Krofička, Ojstrica, Planjava, Brana, Turska gora, Rinke etc.). Present-day picturesque appearance of the Logar Valley was created by a glacier during the last Ice Age.

The valley is 7km long and has an average width of 250m. It consists of three parts. Log and Plest feature beautiful meadows, while Kot is mostly covered in forests. The area behind the green curtain echoes with the magnificent roaring of the Rinka Fall.

The beauty of the Logar Valley is reflected by the pristine state of the environment and the numerous natural features that are of great interest to nature lovers. The farms which have shaped the cultural landscape through centuries have also marked the region. Peaceful coexistence between man and nature is a value that is rarely found nowadays.

The Logar Valley was declared a landscape park in 1987 because of these values. The Park extends from the valley to the upper ridges of the mountains, 203 km2 in total. It builds its image on sustainable development and quality tourist offer.

Eco-Museum of Hop-Growing and Brewing Industry

The Eco-Museum of Hop-Growing and Brewing Industry of Slovenia was opened in November 2019 and is an important tourist asset in the Lower Savinja Valley considering the fact that the tradition of hop-growing and brewing has been ongoing in this region since 1876.

The central museum is located on the premises of a former hop-drying plant has four storeys. A visitor can learn about the food, garments, traditions, and numerous hop-related products and tools used for hop growing and processing. The collection was prepared with the help of families whose lives have been traditionally bound up with hop-growing. They have provided documentation, photographs and memories. The name Eco-Museum thus results from its tight bond with the environment and the people of the region. The central Eco-Museum offers several Entry Information Points in all the municipalities of the Lower Savinja Valley: Braslovče, Polzela, Prebold, Tabor, Vransko and Žalec. Each point presents itself and displays comprehensive information on the Eco-Museum.

Various events accompany and illustrate the hop-growing tradition and local folklore: the setting up of hop poles, the hop-growers’ day, the election of the hop princess and the hop elder, the beginning of the hop-picking season, hop-picking in the traditional way, the hop trail hike, and the hop-growers’ feast.

Beer Fountain

The Green Gold Fountain is a tribute to the hop growing heritage of the Lower Savinja Valley and Žalec, the hop-growing centre of Slovenia. Slovenia is the fifth largest producer of hops in the world and hop is the “spice” that gives beer its distinctive flavour.

Žalec wanted to connect the history with the present and pave the way for an attractive tourist story for the future. The Green Gold Fountain is the result of these efforts.

The story of the fountain began in 2014 at the initiative of the then president of the Association of Tourist Societies of the Municipality of Žalec, Matjaž Omladič. The original idea encouraged the Municipality of Žalec to start looking for an architectural solution in the very same year through an architectural design competition. The Municipality selected one of six architectural concepts designed by the RC Planiranje Company. The preparations for the project began in the following year. The project group was appointed to deal with many challenges and it tackled them successfully. The construction of the Green Gold Fountain started in April 2016 and the opening ceremony was on 6th September 2016, on the anniversary of the second all-Slovenian national meeting in 1868, which is a holiday of the Municipality of Žalec. More than 100 thousand visitors came to see the fountain in two years.

The beer fountain is positioned in the town park, in the town centre next to the marketplace. The architectural design is a symbolic hop flower expressed as two semi-circles; one is a beer fountain and the other is a water fountain. The semi-circles are clad in copper lace, symbolizing beer foam. The fountain was built by the Remont Company and the Etra Company was the technology provider.

The Green Gold Fountain is the recipient of two prizes awarded by the Slovenian Tourist Board – Snovalec and Sejalec.
